After helping to run his family’s auto company for 25 years, Wayne Diller opted for a new career.

He joined the Postal Service in 1980 as a rural carrier associate. He’s been driving a rural route delivering mail for the Mondovi, WI, Post Office for the past 24 years, and enjoyed every scenic mile.

“It’s kind of been my ‘second life,’” Diller told the Mondovi Herald, “and it’s been a good one.”

A big part of why it’s a great second life is that Diller has stayed safe on the job. He recently was honored with a National Safety Council (NSC) Million Mile Award.

Diller told the Herald he enjoys the beautiful scenery in the bluff country surrounding his community, but understands that the view comes with plenty of potential hazards. Every day, he deals with blind corners, hills, wildlife, farm equipment and the behaviors of other drivers. While he jokingly credits luck, at least in part for his accident-free status, he also knows his commitment to driving defensively has been most important.
