Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Michael Fitzmaurice joined Sioux Falls, SD, Postmaster Jan Zimmerman, the Sioux Falls Veterans’ Affairs Health Care System, the Dakotas VA Regional Office and Sioux Falls Vet Center to unveil the Limited Edition Medal of Honor: Vietnam War Forever Stamps on June 30 in Sioux Falls.

The Medal of Honor is the nation’s most prestigious military decoration. It is awarded by the president of the United States on behalf of Congress to members of the armed services who distinguish themselves through “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty” while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.

Fitzmaurice, a South Dakota native, received the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Khe Sanh, Vietnam. His citation reads in part, “SP4c Fitzmaurice’s extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life contributed significantly to the successful defense of the position and resulted in saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers. These actions of heroism go above and beyond the call of duty, are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit on Sp4C Fitzmaurice and the U.S. Army.”

The Medal of Honor: Vietnam War Forever Stamp unveiling was part of the VA’s Summer of Service Open House celebration, bringing attention to volunteer opportunities to assist veterans in the region.
