Many Post Offices around the world have expanded their operations to include non-traditional postal products and services. The trend is so lucrative in fact that a particular post is tapping into the power of e-mails to enhance one of its existing product lines.

Italy’s Poste Italiane has not only witnessed the power of e-mail in shaping modern communication, it has worked to embrace it. By merging the strength of its Registered Mail service with one of the fastest modes of communication in the world, the Italian Postal Service has successfully expanded its business to include a broad, new category of potential customers.

According to Poste Italiane’s website, the Postal Registered electronic Mail (PReM) service “is the electronic version of registered mail that introduces authentication and identity management for senders and receivers, ensuring privacy and email integrity.”

Identity verification isn’t the only feature of the PReM service. Besides certifying the sender, recipient, and the mailing date and time of the e-mail, the service also features an Electronic Postal Certification Mark to spot message corruption and alteration of the original content.

Other features include:

– The same legal value as traditional Registered Mail.

– 1GB of storage space on Poste Italiane’s website.

– Up to 50 recipients of a single PReM message.

– Up to 10 MB of space for each individual mailing.

    Yes, USPS is a trusted brand, and is the only entity in America reliable enough to offer such a service.

    USPS Registered Mail is for shipping negotiable and irreplaceable items. It reads like the Italian Post product is more similar to the USPS Certified Mail product.

    Yes, definitely… whatever it’s called! We should be (should HAVE BEEN!) doing things like this long ago. Why fight the inevitable when it would be easier and more effective to embrace it?! And maybe even more profitable!
