Crowdsourcing Parcel Delivery


One of the growing trends in sharing resources with others for revenue is crowdsourcing. If someone wants to rent out their vehicle, tuxedo, or a room in their home, they can contact a company that specializes in crowdsourcing and connect that item with an interested renter. With the innovative efforts of a newer startup company, that philosophy now carries over to package delivery.

To service the explosive interest in online shopping coupled with inexpensive shipping, Zipments began crowdsourcing package delivery in 2010. Screened and qualified drivers can submit bids to deliver items for local businesses to their customers. The lowest winning bid will receive the contract to deliver the item(s) that same day.

The company provides insurance for deliveries up to $250 in value, but the driver is responsible for additional insurance beyond that, including personal liability and cargo insurance. Drivers are also responsible for any licences that may be required.

The popularity of same-day service has many companies, both old and new, looking for innovative ways to get products into the hands of customers as inexpensively as possible. As consumers continue to migrate their shopping to digital alternatives, crowdsourcing package delivery could find increasing interest in the years to come.

    No. It might compete with a delivery service business in certain areas but not a door to door delivery.

    I think crowdsourcing is good for same day stuff from local shops, but not for regular shipments to more distant areas. I’m not sure there’s a lot of money to be made bidding on small jobs though. I’m curious to see what these guys make.
